http://hollygorock.bandcamp.com/

This album is more or less a “greatest hits” compilation from the daily song blog. I only say this because if you happen to be one of the few who followed the blog and read it on a regular basis, this album will have very few surprises. In fact, even if you are hearing these songs for the first time you probably won’t be surprised either. I tend to write songs about old technology and things from my childhood that no one will relate to. Thems the breaks! But if you happen to be a fan of 1989’s “The Wizard” or even consider yourself to be an early adopter of CompuServe, you might find something of interest here. Otherwise, you should probably download the new Ke$ha album instead. I actually like it quite a bit. Is that the one with TIK TOK on it? I really do dig that song. And the video. If I were to start this album from scratch right now I would probably shoot more for that Ke$ha sound. You think I’m kidding.

This is sort of the debut LP for hollygorock, even though it falls well short time-wise when compared to the debut EP from 2009. Only a couple of songs top the 2-minute mark on “Huffy Hog”, and those few songs could stand to be even shorter. I’m a get in and get out kind of guy if you know what I mean, wink wink nudge nudge, say no more. If I can’t say it in 52 seconds, it’s probably best on someone else’s album. Maybe a Ke$ha album. I really do like Ke$ha. You think I’m kidding but I’m really not. Ask my girlfriend, she’ll tell you.

At any rate, enjoy my short songs with references to retro things.

Running a little behind on DINNERSONGS but here’s one from...

Running a little behind on DINNERSONGS but here’s one from last Saturday night.
“A is for Atkins Park”
a musical review by hollygorock.

I lost the game at Atkins Park.
No one told me that we were friends.
I never picked you for the team, but you know it’s still before the trade deadline.

I’m sorry if I haven’t been back yet.
The Clouds and I had quite a time
and Kati’s jalapeno mac and cheese was excellent as well.

Atkins park caught me off guard.
The ratings were set in every metric.
A 5 out of 5.

It set the bar, the bar’s too high.
And B through Z, well, we shall see.

I’m sorry if I haven’t been back yet.
The Clouds and I, had quite a time
and Kati’s jalapeno mac and cheese was excellent as well.

The song is a one-stanza summary of the movie The Wizard, and was a daily song from the blog in 2009. The studio version is also on the upcoming Huffy Hog LP!

It’s called, quite fittingly, Demo Demo Demo. We had a handful of these rough instrumental demos that we never wrote any words for and I always liked where this one was headed. It just never quite made it there. The bridge is pretty boss. It probably needs to be put into another song.

You could call this the first hollygorock track ever. It was recorded 15 years ago in my mom’s basement. I was in a few bands at the time, but this was the first time I recorded something all on my own. It’s an instrumental tune and I don’t think it has a name, but the file was called “MPL 826” so we’ll go with that.

Mark David Chapman is a Piece of Shit

Some of the songs you’ve already heard if you’ve paid any attention to the daily songs from the past year. I’m doing another round of songs now, some of which may end up in some form or another on the new album. I’m having a bit of writer’s block but the daily songs always seem to cure that. I really like the two so far. Still trying to come up with something for tonight.

The Traveling Blinds

Kati and I were playing poker with Dan and Lins one night and the blinds rolled across the table and disappeared. They were the traveling blinds. Everyone knows blinds can’t see. CHIPS AHOY!

I had something written up about this but Tumblr thought it’d be cool to delete it. Party foul! But anyway, here are the words. I dreamed them up in bed while Kates played Oblivion. Hence the Oblivion reference. So I threw together my attempt at a children’s song called “Days of the Week” and it’s probably the weirdest song I’ve ever written. Here are the words!

Running so late on a Monday.
Running so late on a Tuesday.
Running so late on a Wednesday.
Running so late on a Thursday.
Running so late on a Friday.

Running late, running late, running late!
Gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower.

Running late, running late, running late!
Gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower, gotta take a shower.

Not running out of time anymore.
I have lots of time to find the door.
Not running out of time anymore.
My alarm went off just before four minutes of 10.

It’s Saturday!
It’s Sunday…

Play It Again, Samwise

So, the chords to “Marketing” had been around for a few months. This particular demo has been around since 9/29/2005. It was supposed to be something for Stop The Revolution but we never did anything with it. Kati just listened to it and says it’s her favorite! Here’s what I originally wrote about it when I first emailed it to stoptherev:

Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 17:19:01 -0400
From: Nick Williams <willrob@gmail.com>
To: stoptherev <stoptherev@gmail.com>

Jash and Kate, here’s a little something I made this afternoon, it’s a little demo of something new. Poppy and sort of new wave, the chorus is in a weird timing, like 10, but lots of melodies possible with it all. You might recognize part of it Josh, I think you’ve heard it before, but it’s sped up and more poppy. Let me know what you think of it and we might want to use it for stoptherev. It needs a couple more parts, but I thought I’d go ahead and post the chorus and verse with the cheesy keyboard drums so you’d get an idea of where I was going with it. Word.

Finally finished tonight’s songling. I kind of cheated because I wanted to go to Trivia. So I didn’t write this song today. Well, I did write about half of the words, but the music has been around for a few months. But I could never find anything to do with it. Figured it’d make a Grand Daily Song. Plus it gave me an excuse to work on it and sort of “finish” it. I like it more than I thought I would. It’s a pop song with a standard arrangement. And I hope my boss(es) don’t get offended. I don’t REALLY hate the radio. I love the radio! It just follows the storyline. Here are the words:

Getting a Liberal Arts degree.
This sounds like fun, I can watch TV.
Critiquing movies and episodes.
Then get a job in the radio.

One year as a Computer Scientist was enough.
I like computers, but I hate computers.
Fuck computers. I love you.

And all of the kids took Psychology courses, to be cool.
And I did. And I was. I think.

All this, society would say, was a waste
Drop some courses, fail some courses, then wait.
One degree and a mediocre band…
Now I’ve learned how to turn you into a number.
And that’s it.

God dammit I’m a marketer.
I just realized I’m a marketer.
I’m part of everything that’s wrong with everything that’s wrong with everything.

God dammit I’m a marketer.
I just realized I’m a marketer.
I’m part of everything that’s wrong with everything that’s wrong with everything.
